Based:

Kettering

Duration:

Permanent

Description:

We are currently looking to recruit six apprentices.

In addition to full on-the-job training, the successful candidates will attend monthly workshops at a leading print industry specialist with over 20 years’ experience. The formal apprenticeship will take 18 months followed by another two years gaining hands on experience.

The key skills required are:

  • A high level of self-motivation
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Team player
  • Committed to their personal development

The roles are within the following printing areas - Prepress, Sheetfed, Web or Finishing.

Here’s some useful information to help you understand what the roles involve:

Prepress - the term used for the processes and procedures that occur between the creation of the layout of what has to be printed and the printing itself. The prepress procedure includes the manufacture of a printing plate ready for mounting on the printing press as well as the adjustment of images and texts provided by customers.

There are two main types of printing presses:

Web presses - use reels of paper and the “web” of paper continually moves through the machine until it is cut into sections at the end.

Sheetfed presses - generally use pre-cut sheets which are individually fed into the machine, one sheet at a time.

Finishing is the general term for everything that happens to a job after it has been printed. This means things like cutting, folding, stitching (stapling) and gluing.

The role is physically demanding as printers can be on their feet for up to 12 hours per day.

If you are looking for a career rather than a job then an apprenticeship with us could be for you. For more details about our vacancies in the first instance go to Kettering Borough Training’s website www.Kettering.gov.uk/KBT. First round interviews will be conducted by a member of the Kettering Borough Training team.
